Phrasebook: save and organize words you want to remember

The Phrasebook is where you keep translations worth coming back to: vocabulary for a trip, words from a series you're watching, terms for work. It's organized in lists, and each list has a fixed language pair.

Save a translation

• Mac: translate something, then choose Add to Phrasebook from the card's menu. Pick a list or create one. Mate confirms with "Saved to ‹list›". You can choose which of the alternative translations is shown in the list.
• iPhone and iPad: tap the More actions button on the translation card, then Add to Phrasebook, and pick a list.
• Browser extension: click the "…" button next to a translation in the popup or tooltip, then Add to Phrasebook. On Netflix, click Save in the subtitle tooltip.

Create and manage lists

Open the Phrasebook (Library on Mac and iPhone, the Phrasebook button in the extension popup) and use Create a list… or New word list. Give it a name such as "Italy trip" or "Dark S1". Lists show only for the language pair they were created with, so if you don't see your list, check the languages you have selected.

Delete a word by swiping it (iPhone) or with its delete control (Mac, extension). Deleting a list deletes its words; Mate asks first.

Study with it

The Phrasebook doesn't have flashcards built in. To review words elsewhere, export a list as CSV from the browser extension and import it into Anki or Quizlet. See Export your History and Phrasebook to a CSV file.

Good to know

• On Mac, saving to the Phrasebook needs an internet connection.
• Words saved from Netflix go into a list named after the title and episode.
• Whether the Phrasebook is available on the free plan depends on the current plan settings; the app tells you if it's a Pro feature.
