Why did Mate switch to the standard engine?

If you see a note such as "You've used today's AI translations — using the standard engine for now", you've hit a fair-use limit. Your text was still translated, just with the Basic engine.

The limits

Advanced and AI translations cost us real money per request, so Mate Pro includes a generous daily and monthly allowance for each, plus a maximum size per request. The allowances reset daily and monthly. The Mac app and the Safari extension share the same allowance.

The three messages

• "You've used today's AI translations — using the standard engine for now." The daily AI quota is spent. AI is back tomorrow.
• "You've reached the Advanced engine's fair-use limit — using the standard engine for now." The Advanced character quota is spent for today or this month.
• "This text is too long for the premium engine — using the standard engine." A single request exceeded the per-request size. Split the text.

Tips

• Use AI for the tricky sentences and Basic or Advanced for the bulk. Every character you paste counts.
• Long texts are the fastest way to spend the Advanced quota. Translate the paragraph you need, not the whole page.
• The limits apply per account, so they're shared across your devices.
