The translation looks wrong. What can I do?

Mate combines several translation engines, so there are a few things to try before giving up on a sentence.

Switch the translation style

On Mac and iPhone, tap the engine pill under the translation and pick a different style:

• Basic is fast and fine for everyday phrases.
• Advanced reads more naturally and is better for longer text.
• AI rewrites idioms properly and adds synonyms, examples and a usage note.

Set the tone

For languages with formal and informal address, such as German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian and Japanese, use the Formality control to force "Sie" or "du", "vous" or "tu". See Formal or informal: setting the tone.

Check the source language

If Mate detected the wrong source language, the translation goes off the rails. Pick the language explicitly instead of "Detect automatically".

Translate back

On iPhone, use Translate Back from the card's menu to see how the translation reads when translated into the original language. It's a quick sanity check.

Can I submit a correction?

No. Mate doesn't have its own translation model that could learn from corrections; it relies on third-party engines. If a translation is clearly broken, email [email protected] with the text and the language pair and we'll look into it.
