Which languages does each feature support?

Mate translates between 200+ languages, but not every feature covers every language. Here is what to expect. The full list is at matetranslate.com/languages.

Text translation

All languages, on every platform. The Basic style covers the whole list. Advanced covers about 30 major languages and uses Basic for the rest. AI handles all widely spoken languages well and struggles with very small ones; Mate switches to Basic automatically if the AI can't translate a pair.

Formal and informal tone

With AI: any language that distinguishes them. With Advanced: German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese and Russian.

Pronunciation (speak-out)

Most major languages have a native voice on your device. For languages without one, Mate plays a generated voice from its server, which needs an internet connection. A few languages have no voice at all; the speak button is hidden for them.

Phonetic transcription and transliteration

Transcription (IPA) is available for major languages. Transliteration appears for languages written in non-Latin scripts, such as Russian, Greek, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

Noun genders

German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

Voice input

Speech recognition comes from the system on Mac and iPhone, and from the browser in the extension. It covers roughly 40 to 60 languages. Mate tells you "not supported" if you pick a language without a recognizer.

Offline translation

• iPhone and iPad: 55+ languages, downloaded one at a time (about 40 to 55 MB each). English is built in.
• Mac: about twenty major languages on macOS 15 and later, downloaded per language pair.

Camera translation (iPhone)

Text recognition works for Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts and more. Online recognition covers the widest range; offline recognition is limited to what your device can do on its own.

Any subtitle language Netflix offers for the title; Mate reads the language from Netflix.
