Translate books and articles on iPhone: Books, Kindle, Safari Reader

Reading in a foreign language is easier when a translation is one tap away. Here is how to translate words, sentences and paragraphs in the apps people read in most.

Apple Books

Select the text and tap Translate in the menu. With Mate as your default translator on iOS 18.4 and later, Mate opens with the translation, pronunciation and synonyms. On earlier versions, tap Share › Translate with Mate.

Save words you want to remember to the Phrasebook from Mate's panel, in a list named after the book.

Kindle

The Kindle app has its own translate feature with a short list of languages. For Mate, select the text and tap Share; Kindle sends the passage to the share sheet, where you pick Translate with Mate. Kindle adds the book title and a link to the shared text; Mate translates the passage anyway.

Safari Reader, news apps and Pocket

Select the text and tap Translate (iOS 18.4+) or Share › Translate with Mate. In Safari, you can also translate the whole article with Mate's Safari extension: see How to translate a website in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

Apps that don't allow selection

Some readers and magazine apps render pages as images. Take a screenshot, open Mate, switch to Camera, and pick the screenshot with Pick a photo. Mate recognizes and translates everything on it. See Translate with the camera on iPhone.

Learning as you read

• Look up single words with the AI style: it adds definitions, synonyms and example sentences.
