Translate Netflix subtitles word by word

Watching a series in the language you're learning is one of the best ways to pick it up. Mate's browser extension turns Netflix subtitles into a dictionary: click any word and see what it means, without pausing to look it up elsewhere.

Set-up

1. Install Mate for Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Opera.
2. In Netflix, turn on subtitles in the language you're learning, not in your own language.
3. Make sure Translate Netflix subtitles is on in Settings › On-page. It's on by default.

Use it

Mate redraws the subtitles so that every word is clickable. Click a word: playback pauses and a tooltip shows the translation, pronunciation and synonyms. Click CONTINUE to resume.

Save words for later

Click Save in the tooltip. Mate adds the word to a Phrasebook list named after the title and episode, for example "Dark – S1:E3", so you can revisit the vocabulary from each episode. Saving needs Mate Pro. Click view saved words in the settings to open the Phrasebook.

Tips

• Netflix's own dual-subtitle feature isn't needed. Keep only the foreign subtitles on; Mate provides the translation on demand.
• This works on netflix.com in the browser. The Netflix app for Mac and iPhone doesn't allow extensions.
• For other video sites, select any text on the page and use the floating button or Shift+T. Subtitles rendered as images can't be selected.
