How to use Mate's Safari extension on Mac

Mate for Mac comes with a Safari extension that translates web pages, selected text and Netflix subtitles without leaving Safari. It's installed with the app but has to be switched on in Safari.

Turn it on

1. Open Mate's Settings and go to Safari, then click Manage…. This opens Safari's Settings on the Extensions tab. You can also get there from Safari › Settings › Extensions.
2. Tick Mate.
3. Safari asks which websites Mate may access. Choose Always Allow on Every Website. Mate can only translate pages it's allowed to read; see Why does Mate ask for access to browser history and web pages?.

Back in Mate's Settings › Safari, the status card should say Extension is on.

What it does

• Translate selected text. Select a word or sentence and a floating Mate button appears. Click it for the translation, pronunciation and synonyms in a tooltip.
• Double-click translation. Double-click any word to translate it instantly.
• Translate the whole page. Right-click and choose Translate this page, or click the Mate button in Safari's toolbar and click Translate this page to English. See How to translate a website in Safari on Mac.
• Netflix subtitles. Click a word in the subtitles on netflix.com to translate it. See Translate Netflix subtitles word by word.

Settings

In Mate's Settings › Safari, under In web pages, you can turn Double-click translation, Translate selected text and Translate Netflix subtitles on or off. The toolbar button in Safari has the same switches plus Auto-suggest to translate websites.

Languages

The Safari extension uses the languages selected in the Mac app. Change them there, or in the popover behind the toolbar button.
