Translate offline on your Mac

Yes, on macOS 15 Sequoia and later. Mate for Mac translates on the device, so once a language pair is downloaded, translations work with no internet at all. Offline translation is part of Mate Pro.

Download a language pair

1. Pick the source and target language in the translate window. Offline needs an explicit source language; "Detect automatically" doesn't work offline.
2. Look at the bar at the bottom of the window. If the pair is available offline, an Offline pill appears. Click it and choose to download the pair. The pill shows "Downloading…" until it's done.
3. Once downloaded, click the pill to switch between Offline · On and Offline · Off.

What changes offline

• The on-device engine is used, so the Basic, Advanced and AI styles aren't available and their pill is hidden. On-device translations may be less accurate than online.
• Pronunciation for languages without a native macOS voice, synonyms and phonetic transcription need the internet.
• Adding words to the Phrasebook needs the internet.

Which languages

Roughly twenty major languages, depending on your macOS version. The pill doesn't appear for other pairs.

On older macOS

Offline mode needs macOS 15. On macOS 13 and 14, Mate needs a connection. Your iPhone can translate offline in 55+ languages: see Use Mate offline on iPhone and iPad.

Errors

"Model download failed" or "Model download timed out": check the connection and try again from the pill. "Language not supported for offline translation": that pair isn't available on-device.
