How to translate a website in Safari on Mac

Safari can translate some pages with Apple's translator, in about 20 languages. With Mate for Mac, you can translate any page between 200+ languages, and translate only a sentence when you don't need the whole page.

Set-up

Enable Mate's Safari extension once: Safari › Settings › Extensions › tick Mate, and allow it on every website. See How to use Mate's Safari extension on Mac.

Translate a page

Any of these:

• Right-click anywhere on the page and choose Translate this page.
• Click the Mate button in Safari's toolbar and click Translate this page to English.
• When Mate detects a foreign-language page, it shows a bar in the top-right corner. Click Translate to English there.

The text is replaced in place. Click Show original or Switch back to ‹language› to undo.

Translate automatically

In the bar, tick Always translate French to English to have Mate translate pages in that language as soon as they load. Never translate French stops the bar for that language.

To stop Mate from suggesting translations at all, untick Auto-suggest to translate websites in the toolbar popover. Mate doesn't suggest on Facebook and YouTube, where replacing text breaks the page.

Change the target language

The extension translates into the target language selected in the Mac app. Change it in the app or in the toolbar popover.

Just one sentence

Select it and click the floating Mate button, or double-click a single word. The translation appears in a tooltip and the page stays untouched.

On iPhone

The same feature exists in Mate for iPhone and iPad.
