Mac App Store or direct download: which Mate do I have?

Mate for Mac comes in two builds. They're the same app with different plumbing for payments and updates.

Tell them apart

Open Mate's Settings › About. Next to the version it says App Store or DevMate (our name for the direct-download build).

What differs

Mac App Store Direct download
Install App Store app matetranslate.com/mac
Updates App Store Check for updates in Settings › About, and automatic prompts
Payments Apple Paddle, in your browser
Manage subscription Apple's Subscriptions page matetranslate.com/account
Refunds reportaproblem.apple.com [email protected]
Discount codes not supported supported

Everything else, including the Safari extension, sync and all translation styles, is identical.

Switching between them

Your Mate account carries the subscription, so you can install the other build, sign in, and continue. Don't run both at once: Safari would show two Mate extensions, and only one would work. Delete the copy you don't use.

Note that an App Store subscription can only be managed through Apple even if you're using the direct build, and the other way round.

"Mate can't be opened because Apple cannot check it"

The direct build is signed and notarized, so this shouldn't happen with a download from our site. If you see it, the download was interrupted. Download again from matetranslate.com/mac.
