Mate translates without an internet connection in 55+ languages, on a plane, abroad without data, or in a basement. Download the languages before you need them. Offline translation is part of Mate Pro.
Download a language
- Open the language picker (tap the source or target language).
- Find the language and tap its download button. Mate tells you the size: "This will take 45 MB."
- Tap Download.
Each language takes roughly 40 to 55 MB. English is built in and needs no download. To translate offline between two languages, download both; between English and one language, download only that one.
You can also download from the Offline pill on the translate screen, which offers the current pair.
Use it
When the connection drops, Mate switches to offline mode by itself; the Offline pill on the translate screen shows ON. Tap the pill to force offline or online mode. On-device translations may be less accurate than online, but they're good enough to get by.
What's different offline
- Only the on-device engine works; the Basic, Advanced and AI styles and the tone control are hidden.
- Synonyms, phonetic transcription and pronunciation for languages without an iOS voice need a connection.
- Camera translation works offline for the scripts your device can recognize on its own.
Remove a language
Settings › Offline Languages, swipe the language left, and delete. English can't be removed.
Errors
- "This language pair isn't downloaded for offline use": download the missing language while you're online.
- "Model download failed" or "timed out": check the connection and try again.
Mate for Mac translates offline on macOS 15 and later: see Translate offline on your Mac.
