Translate PDFs on iPhone and iPad

Mate translates the text you select in a PDF, in Files, Books, Safari, Mail attachments, or any PDF reader.

With Mate as the default translator (iOS 18.4 and later)

1. Open the PDF and select the text.
2. Tap Translate in the selection menu.
3. Mate opens with the translation.

Set this up once in Mate's Settings › Integrations › Default Translator. See Set Mate as the default translator on iPhone.

With the share sheet (any iOS version)

1. Select the text in the PDF.
2. Tap Share.
3. Choose Translate with Mate. If it's not visible, scroll to the end of the actions, tap Edit Actions, and add Mate.
4. The translation appears in a panel. Tap Done to go back to the PDF.

Scanned PDFs

If the text can't be selected, the PDF is a scan. Take a screenshot, or use Mate's camera on the page: open Mate, switch to Camera, and pick the screenshot from your library. See Translate with the camera on iPhone.

Whole documents

Mate translates what you select, not the file. For long PDFs, select a page at a time. Mate for Mac takes up to 20,000 characters per translation, which is comfortable for whole pages: see Translate PDFs on your Mac.
