"Translate with Mate" is missing from the share sheet

The share sheet shows a few favorite actions and hides the rest. Mate is usually just hidden, not missing.

Add Mate to the favorites

  1. Select some text anywhere and tap Share.
  2. Scroll the list of actions to the very bottom and tap Edit Actions.
  3. Find Translate with Mate and tap the green plus to add it to Favorites. Drag it up so it's first.

From now on it appears at the top for every text selection.

It's not in Edit Actions either

  • Make sure you're sharing text. The action only appears for text selections, not for links, images or files. Select the words first, then share.
  • Restart the iPhone. iOS occasionally loses track of extensions after an app update.
  • Reinstall Mate if a restart doesn't help. Your Phrasebook and History come back after you sign in, provided sync was on.

The action appears but does nothing

The app you're sharing from may pass the text in a format Mate can't read; some PDF readers do this. Copy the text and use Paste and Translate from Mate's Home Screen icon instead.

A better route on iOS 18.4 and later

Set Mate as the default translator and use Translate directly in the selection menu, no share sheet needed. See Set Mate as the default translator on iPhone.
