Speak to translate on iPhone and iPad

Say it instead of typing it. Mate listens, shows what it heard, and translates as soon as you finish. Voice input is part of Mate Pro.

Use it

1. Set the source language to the language you'll speak. Voice input needs a specific one; if the source is "Detect automatically", Mate asks you to Choose Language first.
2. Tap the microphone button in the input bar.
3. Talk. Your words appear as you speak. Stop, and Mate translates.
4. Tap the button again to stop recording early.

The text stays in the input field, so you can fix a misheard word and translate again.

Start from the Home Screen

Press and hold Mate's icon and tap Start Speaking. Mate opens already listening.

Permissions

iOS asks for Microphone and Speech Recognition access the first time. If you declined, open the Settings app › Apps › Mate and enable both. The message "Please allow Mate to use Microphone and Speech Recognition" means one of them is off.

Languages

Speech recognition comes from iOS and covers about 60 languages. If yours isn't among them, Mate says "‹language› is not supported".

Having a conversation

Speak, show the translation, swap the languages with the swap button, hand the phone over, let them speak. The Advanced and AI styles handle spoken, informal language better than Basic.

Speech recognition works offline for many languages once you have the iOS dictation language installed; the translation itself is offline only with a downloaded language, see Use Mate offline.
