Mate reads translations aloud with the voices built into iOS. It picks the best voice installed for each language, so you change the voice by installing a better one in iOS settings.
Get a better voice
- Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices.
- Pick the language, then a voice. Voices marked Enhanced or Premium sound much more natural than the default ones. Tap the download button next to one; they're 100 to 300 MB.
- Once it's downloaded, Mate uses it automatically. You may need to reopen Mate.
The same list lets you choose between accents (US, UK, Australian, Indian English, for example) and between male and female voices.
Change the speed
In Mate's Settings, drag the Speak-out Speed slider between SLOW and FAST. Slow helps when you're repeating after the voice.
Languages without a voice
For languages iOS has no voice for, Mate plays a voice from its server, which needs an internet connection. A few languages have no voice at all, and the speaker button is hidden.
