How to translate a web page in Chrome and Edge

Chrome and Edge can translate pages with Google Translate and Microsoft Translator. Mate adds what they lack: 200+ languages, translation of just the text you select, pronunciation, synonyms, a phrasebook, and Netflix subtitles.

Install the extension

• Mate for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store
• Mate for Edge from the Edge Add-ons store, or install the Chrome version in Edge

Translate the whole page

1. Open a foreign-language page. Mate shows a bar in the top-right corner: "This page is in German".
2. Click Translate to English. Mate translates the page in place and shows progress as a percentage.
3. Click Switch back to German to restore the original.

If you don't see the bar, right-click the page and choose Open full page translation.

• Always translate German to English: Mate translates such pages automatically from now on. This is a Mate Pro feature.
• Never translate German / Never translate example.com: hides the bar for that language or site.

Mate skips page translation on sites that break when their text is replaced, such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, X, Notion, Figma, GitHub and Outlook. Selected-text translation works on those too.

Translate only what you select

Select a word or a sentence, then click the floating Mate button or press Shift+T. The translation appears in a tooltip. Details in Translate selected text on any web page.

Turn page translation on or off

Click the Mate icon, open Settings, and go to the On-page tab. The Full-page translation switch controls the bar.

Change the target language

Click the Mate icon in the toolbar and pick the target language in the popup. The page translation bar uses that language.
